New Romney is a small town on the edge of Romney Marsh. It is an area of flat rich land reclaimed from the sea. The harbour has long since deen silted in. New Romney is one of the original Cinque Ports of England, with the harbour adjacent to the church. This is now more than a mile from the sea.
The impressive Norman church in the centre of town originally stood at the harbour side, the church entrances are several feet below ground level. Have a look for the boat hooks still evident on the side walls of the church.
The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway is a 22 km line that runs from the Cinque Port of Hythe via Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands to Dungeness, close to Dungeness nuclear power station and Dungeness lighthouse.
A twenty minute drive north of new Romney will find you at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. This set in 600 acres and incorporates the historic mansion and landscaped gardens. The estate was purchased in 1973 by John Aspinall to solve lack of space at Howletts Wild Animal Park, and it was opened to the public in 1976. Since 1984 the animal park has been owned by a charity (The John Aspinall Foundation). Port lympne is home to over 50 species of animals and makes a great day out in itself.
